Venice, Italy

Built on a lagoon and shaped by centuries of maritime history, Venice offers a distinctive setting where architectural heritage, living cultural traditions, and international exchange converge—making it an inspiring destination for scholarly dialogue and collaboration.

Venice is a city that instinctively slows the pace of those who enter it. Without the presence of cars, the sounds of water, footsteps, and oars touching the canals define daily life. In the early morning, soft light settles over the waterways, and the city feels quietly awake, composed and unhurried.Born on water yet far from fragile, Venice was once one of the most influential maritime republics of the medieval world. It served as a vital link between Europe and the East, where spices, silk, and ideas converged. Landmarks such as the Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s Square stand side by side, reflecting a history in which politics, trade, and civic life were closely intertwined.

The true character of Venice often reveals itself away from its grand monuments. In narrow alleys and small squares, everyday life unfolds gently. Neighbors pause to talk, children play, and time in local cafés seems to move more slowly. Efficiency is not the guiding principle here. Presence and attention are.

Contemporary Venice feels like a quiet and thoughtful narrator. It does not seek to assert itself, but through water, light, and daily rhythms, it demonstrates how history and the present can coexist. For visiting scholars, Venice offers a setting well suited to observation, reflection, and meaningful exchange, restrained in tone, gentle in atmosphere, and rich in depth.

Beyond tradition, Chengdu surges forward as China’s “Silicon Valley of the West”, home to the Tianfu Software Park and over 100 Fortune 500 companies. Historic lanes like Kuanzhai Xiangzi (Wide and Narrow Alleys) now house avant-garde boutiques beside Qing-dynasty courtyards, while the Chengdu Science City fuels breakthroughs in AI and biomedicine.
